The predecessor models of the lock gate drives in the locks of the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal are already made by KACHELMANN GmbH. In the first half of 2010, the Bamberg and Strullendorf locks were overhauled and new-generation Kachelmann gearboxes were installed.
One of the 800 kg spur gearboxes is mounted on the left and one on the right of the lock gate. The gearboxes move the lock gates, which weigh several tons, synchronously upwards or downwards, each with an output of 18.5 kW. The gearboxes have to overcome both the enormous water pressure that is generated during each lock operation and the dead weight of the lock gate. It is the task of the Kachelmann team to realize these high requirements.
Constantly developed know-how in special gearbox construction not only ensures the smooth running of Chinese rolling mills or container cranes in the port of Hamburg, but also the locks in Strullendorf and Bamberg.
