Project description:
The customer had initially handed over the gearbox to an external company for repair. Due to a lack of drawings and the necessary technical documentation, our customer decided to send the complete gearbox for the twin-screw extruder to KACHELMANN GETRIEBE for repair. This was a KACHELMANN GETRIEBE type 2 A97 C120Sa-V helical extruder gearbox that had been in use for 35 years. The extruder gearbox was delivered completely disassembled.
Challenge: Cost of daily production downtime
As valuable time had already elapsed, the gearbox repair specialists at KACHELMANN GETRIEBE had to react particularly quickly in order to minimise the costs of our customer's daily production downtime.
Findings
After the incoming inspection of the extruder gearbox, the following findings were made:
- All gearing parts had to be remanufactured from 18CrNiMo7-6, hardened in use and fits and tooth flanks ground.
- Coupling sleeves on the output had to be replaced, as well as
- a toothed belt wheel and a toothed belt pinion.
Measures implemented
The housing was sandblasted, all holes were levelled and one hole was chiselled out. The inside of the housing was also repainted. All roller bearings including 2 tandem bearings and the sealing rings as well as all standard parts and screws were replaced. The lubrication lines still to be used had to be cleaned and checked for continuity, missing lubrication lines were replaced. The oil pump and double shift filter were replaced. The gearbox was fitted, the output shafts adjusted and a test run carried out. The gearbox was then primed and painted.

The extruder gearbox received a complete overhaul / retrofit as well as a 1-year manufacturer's factory warranty.
After the gearbox was delivered to the customer in Holland by an express courier driver, an assembly team from KACHELMANN GETRIEBE reinstalled the gearbox in the customer's plant.
The installation by the KACHELMANN GETRIEBE assembly team guarantees the customer optimum alignment of the overhauled gearbox in the existing system.
Duration of the general overhaul: 3 weeks
The important production line for our customer was successfully put back into operation after just 3 weeks!
